Case Study 1: Pain and cognitive impairment
Mary is a 89 year old lady who is admitted to hospital following a fall in her sheltered accommodation. On assessment she complained of pain in her right leg and on examination there is a shortening and external rotation of her right limb indicative of a fractured femur. She has been admitted to A&E via the ambulance service unaccompanied by any carers or family.
She has previously been diagnosed with multi infarct dementia and macular degeneration.

Case Study 2: Chronic Pain Syndrome
Robert is a 32 year old physical education teacher who sustained a compound fracture of his tibia and fibula in a rugby match 10 weeks ago. He had internal fixation of the fracture followed by a rehabilitation programme. For the last 2 weeks he has been trying to reduce the use of analgesics in preparation for returning to work, however he is finding increasing difficulty in sleeping due to increasing pain originating in both his lower leg and now in his lower back.
Robert is married with a 7 month old son. His wife, Becky is currently on maternity leave and is due to return to full time employment in next month.

Case Study 3: Acute Pain
Sutha is an 18year old university student. She moved with her family to the UK from Pakistan when she was 12 years old. She has been admitted to A&E with suspected appendicitis following 16 hours of abdominal pain, vomiting and pyrexia. She is awaiting review by the surgeon and confirmation that she will require surgery.
