Read chapter 1 “Psychiatric Diagnosis” by Lucy Johnstone in: Tummey, R and Turner, T (2008) Critical Issues in Mental health. London: Palgrave Macmillan
- List the main points in relation to psychiatric diagnosis (link this with our discussions re DSM)
- What are the potential problems with a psychiatric diagnosis? (Link this with your work on CMHD’s last week)
- What is a formulation approach?
- Think of the diagnostic and formulation approaches – what are the implications of these approaches in terms of intervention?
- Think about a case study you wish to choose for your assignment – list important factors which will help you identify a possible diagnosis for that person. (You can use the formulation approach suggested in pages 17-18 of chapter 1)
- What are the implications of a diagnosis for the person?
