BIOINFORMATICS ASSIGNMENT

Produce a portfolio of activity which shows tutorial based activity and bioinformatic analysis of a given fungal sequence. This analysis is to include identity of gene structure, orthologues and paralogues via blast analysis, translation, RE analysis, PCR primer design and phylogenetic analysis. Find a disorder associated with your gene.

WORKED EXAMPLE

It is now straightforward to perform a variety of sophisticated internet based searches to compare DNA and/or protein sequences and so suggest likely functions.

You have been given a DNA sequence as a starting point, the first thing you need to perform is a BLAST search to try and find out more information about your gene

To perform a search using BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) click on:

BLAST

Standard nucleotide – nucleotide Blast (Blastn).

You may then type or cut and paste the sequence into the Search box. Leave other settings on the default values.

Is it in FASTA format? Is the correct database selected?

Click Blast (bottom left of page) to start the search .

After a few moments you will be given an I.D. number to check the file for your completed search.
