The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) recounts the life of a gypsy girl called Esmeralda. When her love interest Phoebus is killed by the demented Chief Justice Frollo, she is accused of the crime and goes to jail. However, as she was about to be hanged, the gentle giant Quasimodo saves her and takes her to the cathedral where she can find sanctuary. When King Louis IX hears of Frollo’s crime, he orders his arrest and Esmeralda is pardoned while all the Gypsy people are freed.
