Following the completion of the taught contentthe assessment will be the creation of a 3000-word essay which will be used as evidence to showcase your enhancedknowledge that you have acquired over the duration of the module and through the research you have done.
You will choose two contemporary issues that have been covered during the module to discuss.
There should be three key sections to your essay – introduction, main body and conclusion.
Introduction (400 words):
Introduce your assignment by setting out how you will tackle the essay question (revisit this after you have completed the essay to ensure this is still appropriate and make any changes necessary). Your introduction should let the reader know what to expect below – factors contributing to perspectives of childhood, the areas you will consider and your personal values and beliefs.
In your introduction you will set the scene for your assignment, and you will introduce your two topic areas clearly. You will define or explain clear key terms supported by relevant and up to date literature. It is expected that you will outline how you will explore each issue, and in which order you will write. It is important that you keep to this order throughout the assignment to show your organisational skills. You will also introduce your key factors that are appropriate relating to your two chosen topic areas and why these are important in a discussion about your selected contemporary issues.
Main body(2300 words approx.):
This is in three discrete parts:
- 1 x topic area one (900 words approx.)
- 1 x topic area two (900 words approx.)
- Justification of your own personal beliefs (500 words approx.)
You will explore/analyse/critique/evaluate your two topic areas that you said you would explore in the introduction, in that order.
Each paragraph has a topic sentence (to introduce main idea) and subsequent sentences develop the topic, making reference to literature and theory as required.
You will consider the factors that you have articulated in your introduction. You will consider 3 or 4 factors and write in detail about each one. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one. You will link and support with research and relevant theory. You willdiscuss different views for your issues. It is supportive to consider issues for practice. It is recommended you write about 900 words for each topic (2 x 900 words = 1,800 words).
As always, you should support your discussion with recent research (reading given by tutors each week), theory, documents, policies and material you have sourced yourself. A critical approach to reading is needed to gain a higher grade.
It is important that you articulate and justify your own personal values and beliefs (500 words approx.). It is very important that your support your own view with reference to relevant and up-to-date literature. In this section of your work,you can write in the first person to demonstrate your own reflection.
Throughout your writing you must use BCU Harvard Referencing to make citations of the literature you have used. You must also include an accurate reference list at the end of your assignment.

The suggested word count is a guide, and you are allowed an additional 10%. Your assignment must be 3000 words +/- 10%.
