The principal aim of the coursework is to enable students to develop transferrable set of skills for solving problem basically will emphasize on the Material and Energy Balance (MEB) calculations, critical thinking and reasoning using numerical skills. Also to discuss the equations of state for gases.
Specific learning outcomes for the completion of the assigned task are the following:
1. Understand the concept of stoichiometry and stoichiometric calculations.
2. Conversant with the concept of ideal gas and equations of state.
3. Study about the relationships between process parameters.
4. Perform material calculations for various processes;
5. Study the concept of recycling, bypassing and purging carried out in industrial processes.
Task 1: Students should answer Midterm that will be conducted during the class hour on certain topics as specified in the weekly teaching schedule. Content will have to include theoretical/conceptual questions and problem solving. The questions may include mainly multiple choice and short answer type. Students need to be attentive in the classes and write the Mid-term. [30 Marks] Task 2: There are various types of chemical process industries thus a thorough understanding of essential concepts and principles are imperative for its successful operation. In this task student will have to write a report about any topic on any selected industry plant below are samples of the topics:
1- Material balance without chemical reaction
2- Material balance with chemical reaction
3- Recycling operation
4- Bypassing operation
5- Purging operation
6- Combustion of coal
7- Fuel gases 8- Oxidation of sulphur
1. Introduction of the identified chemical process industry/ plant Write an introduction about the industry operation with neat flow sheet if applicable.
2. Process flow diagram with given conditions and parameters Illustrate a process flow diagram (PFD) related to the selected industry plant. The process flow diagram (PFD) should indicate the general flow of plant processes and equipment with given conditions and parameters.
3. Understanding the Importance and Application of the selected topic. Write proper background information on the selected topic with examples.
4. Material Balance In this assigned task you can get the knowledge of basic calculations used to solve the different types of problems in process industry regarding reactions, products etc. Discuss the material balance and design of the selected equipment (if any) including the following:
