In this module we introduce some of the most significant areas of human resource management responsibility. Anyone seeking to develop a career in HR, in the UK or globally will find it to be both interesting and essential to their professional development. It will also be of interest to anyone with an interest in the management of people or who anticipates building a generalist management career.
Our focus is on how organisations achieve the most fundamental HRM aim of mobilising a workforce. In order to function effectively all employers need to ensure that at all times they have the right people in the right jobs. Increasingly they are also drawing on other sources of skills and expertise accessed from a wider network of people with whom they maintain some form of contractual relationship. It is with the business of staffing an organisation effectively that this module is concerned.

Over 11 three-hour sessions we will introduce and discuss a wide range of topic areas relating to the staffing of organisations; a particular emphasis being placed on contemporary developments and debates in the field. In our sessions we will focus on the following:
• human resource planning and job design
• recruitment and selection
• induction and socialisation
• employee retention
• employer branding
• retirement and redundancy
• managing individual performance
• strategic aspects of resourcing and talent management

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate all six of the intended module learning outcomes; which is reflected both in its formative and its summative elements.

Formative assessment will take the form of in-class discussion exercises with in-class  tutor feedback. Summative assessments will be by a group video presentation and individual written assignment of 1500 words. The first element of the summative assessment requires students to work in groups and to interview an HR professional on a chosen HR challenge. The group will present and video and engage in a critical discussion with the audience, which will be composed of fellow colleagues, members of staff, and the HR managers interviewed. The second element requires students to individually reflect on the particular challenge and to produce a reflective account where they provide a critical analysis of the particular challenge. Students will receive oral and written feedback on the summative assessments.

Students who fail to pass their assignments will be required to rework them and resubmit at a later date. The alternative assessment for this module is a 3000 word Individual Assignment (100% weighting).  Students who will undertake the alternative assessment will be asked to produce a critical analysis of a key HR (contemporary) challenge.
