Coursework, Essay of 800 words, that addresses (LO’s 1 and 2)

Submission Date:

The deadline by 20th November 2024 before 15:00 (3 pm) via Moodle submission point

Assessment Task

Your essay must meet learning outcomes 1 and 2 (these can be seen above).

Topic

In preparing your essay you should focus on one public health challenge or issue as an example to illustrate your discussion.  You may find it useful to identify a specific aspect (sub-topic) as your focus, to enable a deeper analysis (e.g. a population group, international agreement) however, this is not required. Remember that the discussion is ‘global’, therefore, focusing on a particular country is not appropriate. The issue may be a disease or a wider phenomenon.

As a guide, any issue or type of issue discussed in the module core texts would be appropriate (a communicable or non-communicable disease; an environmental or humanitarian issue). You need to make the case that this is a ‘global health’ phenomenon.

Further Guidelines for the essay:

The essay should clearly demonstrate that you have met both of the learning outcomes (see the marking criteria, available and on Moodle site in the ‘Assessment’ section). It must provide a clear analysis of your chosen issue as a global public health concern, and it must apply some of the key module ideas/theories. It should include the following elements:

  •  Provide some introductory detail about your chosen issue
  •  Show how it is a global public health issue (e.g. use evidence about scope and scale, impact; and how it is a ‘global’ (not just international) concern; how it is affected by global actions).
  • Consider how/how far the issue is an example of the effects of globalisation
  • Consider how/how far the issue is subject to global health governance
  • Briefly identify and outline examples of the social, economic, political and environmental factors that influence the issue and its impact (it is not necessary to attempt to include examples of all four categories).

You should be explicit in your use and application of the key terms, to your issue.

You must support your essay by referencing up to date scholarly sources. Use the Library resources to search for relevant research and reviews that have been published in scholarly journals. Follow the university Referencing Guidelines (linked from the Moodle site).

To pass the assignment you will need to demonstrate that you take a consistently ‘critical’ approach to evidence and arguments: do not just describe or repeat information.

You will also need to demonstrate clarity in the structure and communication of your written discussion.

Submission Details

Assessment Title:  Global Public Health Presentation

Assessment Task

Presenting a specific topic that covers all the learning outcomes (LO 2-4)

Guidelines for the presentation:

This is an in-person, individual presentation of up to 10 minutes. You will present live in class to an assessor* and a small number of students from your cohort (up to 8). Your presentation should be supported by audio-visual materials, in the form of PowerPoint presentation (which must have been pre-submitted to Moodle).

*some sessions will have two assessors, for moderation purposes.

We advise using the same topic for both assignments, to enable you to deepen your reading and analysis. However, you can change topic from your essay, if you wish.

The presentation should clearly demonstrate that you have met all of the learning outcomes (see the marking criteria, available in full marking guide and on Moodle site in the ‘Assessment’ section). It must provide a clear analysis of your chosen issue as a global public health concern, and it must apply some of the key module ideas/theories. It should include the following elements:

  • Provide some brief introductory detail about your chosen issue
  • Show how it is a global public health issue (e.g. use evidence about scope and scale, impact; and how it is a ‘global’ (not just international) concern; how it is affected by global actions/ globalisation).

The main body of your presentation must develop an analysis by including the following:

  • Consider the influence of the social determinants of health and health inequalities (the social  or wider determinants of health)
  • Discuss (as appropriate to your topic) the social, economic, political and environmental factors  that influence the issue and its impact (the structural factors , the ‘causes of the causes’ or ‘the fundamental causes’ )
  • Apply ONE of the social/political theories introduced in the module (neoliberalism OR structural violence) within your analysis.
  • Reach a conclusion about the current and / or future  situation (this may include a comment on the effectiveness/ ineffectiveness of global health governance in relation to your topic)

You must support your presentation by referencing up to date scholarly sources throughout, to support each point.

You will also need to demonstrate clarity in the structure and communication of your discussion and the ability to answer questions related to your presentation (from your peers and teaching staff).
