The aim of this assessment is for students to develop an understanding of acute and complex conditions to meet the Learning Outcomes for the module.

Case Study: This Case Study is in two parts:

  1. 1.       Study Guide

The Study Guide is available on the NURS631 Moodle site under the Assessment Tab. It asks students to explore different aspects of nursing care for a client presenting to a complex care environment with trauma. Once this has been completed, the student will be able to answer the three Summative Assessment questions. The student is not required to submit their Study Guide and it will not be assessed.

  1. 2.       Summative Assessment

The student is required to answer all three summative questions. The combined marks to all three questions contribute to 40% of the final grade.

Mr Almond has been admitted to the neurology ward and is waiting to go to theatre for an open reduction and internal fixation of his fractured tibia and fibula related to the car crash. Prior to going to surgery Mr Almond must be cared for, mindful of his traumatic brain injury.

Develop a preoperative nursing care plan specifically for Mr Almond and his whānau while he is in the neurological ward. Choose from one of the following nursing diagnoses:

  • Anxiety related to altered level of consciousness.
  • Risk of increased intracranial pressure.
  • Risk of neurovascular compromise distal to fractured tibia and fibula.
  • Explain two (2) pathophysiological changes that occur due to a primary head injury and the nursing considerations associated with these.
  • The use of opioids in the management of TBI is complex and must be used with caution. Explain one (1) of the potential side effects of using morphine for Mr Almond. Include the underlying pathophysiological changes and briefly explain what nursing considerations must be followed.
  • Mt Almond’s BGLs are elevated on admission to the neurological ward. Explain the underlying pathophysiology of Mr Almond’s raised BGL’s.
