Noise-induced hearing loss is a major issue individually, families, society and Government. A very large number of people are affected and it is a major source of depression for individuals because of isolation. The national costs exceed currently $35 million NZ p.a. but is rising, in spite of a legislative change in 2009 introduced by the Government.
One of the intervention programmes developed in the USA is the “Dangerous Decibels” programme, now also taught by the Audiology School of Auckland University. About 50,000 New Zealanders from primary schools to employers have attended. The programme has been extensively monitored in various countries.
Write a review of the intervention programme in New Zealand and suggest improvements that can be made.
