By completing this assignment, students will:
- Identify an OHS issue in a real-world retail setting.
- Develop a customized OHS policy and procedures to address the issue.
- Design and deliver a 20-minute training program for employees based on the policy.
Project Parts
Part 1: Retail Store Observation
- Visit a Retail Store:
- Visit a retail store in your favorite mall and observe workplace conditions.
- Identify one (1) OHS issue (from class discussions, or based on what you observe)
- Document Observations:
- Take detailed notes about the issue, its potential risks, and affected parties.
- Include photos (if allowed) or sketches to illustrate the observed problem.
- Report:
- Your observations, photos / illustrations will become the introduction in your report (2-3 pages)
Part 2: OHS Policy and Procedures
- Draft an OHS Policy:
- Include a clear policy statement outlining the store`s commitment to addressing the identified issue.
- Specify objectives (e.g., "Ensure all employees are trained in proper lifting techniques to prevent back injuries").
- Develop Procedures:
- Outline step-by-step procedures for mitigating the issue.
- Example for slips, trips, and falls:
- Daily inspections of floors.
- Immediate cleanup of spills.
- Clear signage in wet or slippery areas.
- Report:
- Your policy and procedures should be 1.5 spaced, Arial format of between 10-15 pages (excluding title page, appendices and references). Follow all APA citation style guidelines (visit the AWC for more details). Use proper grammar and sentence structure for a policy.
- If you use AI (e.g. ChatGPT), please reference the prompts, and include a copy of your prompts as an appendix. Please note: I expect you to use AI as an assistant. BUT for you to receive full grades, I want to see the prompts you use.
Part 3: Training Program Design
- Training Objectives:
- Specify what employees should learn by the end of the session (your learning objectives)
- Program Content:
- Include practical and engaging components:
- Visual aids: PowerPoint slides, posters, or videos.
- Interactive activities: Role-playing scenarios, quizzes, or group discussions.
- Demonstrations: Show proper use of equipment or procedures.
- Create a Training Guide:
- Prepare a facilitator guide (5-8 pages) with the session structure:
- Introduction (5 minutes): Explain the issue and why it’s important.
- Core Content (10 minutes): Deliver the main training material.
- Interactive Activity (5 minutes): Engage participants in a practical exercise.
Part 4 – Verbal Progress Reports:
Two (2) verbal progress reports will be required to ensure that you are on track with your project. These short meetings are an opportunity for you to ask questions and obtain ideas and suggestions to your project prior to project submission.
Part 5: Presentation
- Deliver the Training:
- Each team presents their 20-minute training session to the class, simulating an employee workshop.
- Use visuals and handouts to enhance engagement.
- Encourage classmates to act as "employees" for role-play or feedback.
