Entrepreneurship – Context, Process and Practice

You are required to identify an idea for a new start-up business. This can be any type of business, selling any type of product and/or service; it does not have to be a unique or novel idea, but it must be an idea which utilizes the effectual means [i.e., who you are, what you know and who you know] you currently have available.

You must develop and deliver a Poster [to be displayed A1 size: 594 x 841 mm electronically on ONE PowerPoint slide but then converted to PDF or JPEG for submission] and 3-minute recorded pitch of your idea.

In the early weeks of the module, you will be assisted in the ideation and opportunity recognition process as well as being assisted to adopt an effectual approach and develop skills related to pitching and poster presentations. There will also be opportunities within the module sessions to test out your idea on peers and receive formative feedback from the module tutor.

Each individual student’s poster & pitch must:

  • Convince that this idea represents an opportunity for new venture creation and that you are the right person to make it happen.
  • Demonstrate that the proposed idea represents a solution to an identified problem and has a unique selling point.
  • Explicitly show how you could use effectual means [who you are; what you know and who you know] to inform the idea.
  • Highlight who the intended market for this venture could be and what the route to this market might be.
  • Be structured in a logical and clear order.
  • Make effective use of visual aid(s).
  • Be in a suitable verbal and visual style for effective and professional business communication.
