Critical Incident Account Journal/Blog

Assessment Details

Students will be asked to discuss the pros and cons of a policing power that has caused controversy and impacts on community confidence.

Students will create an account, blog or journal of a fictious incident which will be provided by the module coordinator. The contents of these should cover the areas that have been discussed in lectures and seminars.

The incident will be intentionally open so that students have the freedom to conduct wide breadth of research and/or focus on specific areas. The marking level will be shaped by the degrees of balance and analysis made of such incidents, and will also be influenced by use of resources; see below for general principles re academic writing for this module.

Artificial Intelligence

You may use generative AI such as ChatGPT to assist you in the process of undertaking the assessment in the following ways: brainstorming, research, planning, feedback, editing.

All use of generative AI must be explicitly acknowledged, and any artificially generated content (e.g., images) explicitly labelled, with the source of the AI tool referenced using current APA referencing conventions You can find further guidance on the library website on their AI webpage).

In submitting your assignment, you agree to disclose the extent to which you have used generative AI in preparing this work and include evidence of your AI use in your appendices (e.g., dated screen shots of your use of this tool or copy and paste your AI chat into Word).

Failure to disclose your generative AI use may result in a 0 for your assignment and a referral for academic misconduct (see the Student Academic Misconduct Policy under Essential Info in the MyLTU app).

How to Approach the Task

You should begin by thinking about the incident chosen and identify the key elements you will respond to. You should then establish a list of readings/resources you will work through to respond to the issue. This reading list should comprise of both academic journal articles, academic books, and academic book chapters. Online resources such as study.com and tutor2u.net should not be used.

Make notes on the key ideas and problems you can identify and the resources you will use. Part of the assessment will involve assessment of how you arranged and presented the material in a coherent manner.

A good way to start is by using part of your account to describe the issue/s, and to point towards the direction you will be taking, providing the reader with context and understanding of what is to come. The rest of your presentation should present a balanced discussion on the topic.

It is essential that you reference any quotes or major sources used, though this is less academic than an essay. Look at other examples of how to write blogs etc.

Assessment Guidance and Support

I will work with you all to ensure you have a strong understanding of the assessment and what is required. This will involve going through assessments during the lectures and engaging in the assessment sessions. In addition, your understanding of the assessments will be consistently tested (i.e., constructive alignment, assessment clinics, and content designed around the assessment) throughout the module to ensure clarity and understanding.
