Task: Prepare a brief Strategic Tourism Plan 2035 for Dahab, Egypt
Small coastal urban tourism destinations in Egypt often face deteriorating urban conditions, an increase in informal urban growth, encroachment on agriculture land and environmental degradation, resulting in unfulfilled tourism potential. Recognizing these facts, and according to the Governmental programme for development aiming at setting a comprehensive system for sustainable urban development for Egyptian cities to achieve the National Development Strategic Framework 2052 and to contribute to the achievement of SDGs, there is a need for strengthened strategic tourism planning.
One of these coastal destinations is Dahab. Dahab is located on the southeast coast of Sinai in Egypt on the Red Sea coast, about 100 km northeast of Sharm el-Sheikh. The main economic activities in Dahab are tourism and fishing. In the past, the Government helped the arrival of many local and international tourism companies, hotel chains and the establishment of many other ancillary facilities and this made the town a popular destination for tourists. Dahab is served by Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport.
Given the town´s unique location, special character and highly distinctive and diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystem, it is positioned as one of the major tourist attractions, especially as one of the most popular diving sites around the world due to the wide range of underwater wildlife. In recent years, Dahab has witnessed a steady increase in investment demand.
