Holbrooke is a negotiator who provides an account of a diplomatic initiative led by America that resulted in the end of war in 1995 in former Yugoslavia. The initiative is fast-paced and is offered in the first person by Holbrooke. Holbrooke is once an ambassador to Germany, a past master of the peace talks in Vietnam and the States` assistant secretary. He is sent by the president of the United States, Clinton to Bosnia as a peace chief negotiator. The book describes tragedy, confusion, and conflict before the final success.
