The traditional model of police departments is structured in a manner that hinders effective service delivery. Many are times that police officers respond after the crime has already happened. The traditional model of policing deters immediate response to crime. This is especially due to presence of an inflexible chain of command. The traditional police department paradigm has got high level of bureaucracy and this slows the reaction of police to crime. Due to the complex bureaucratic measures, immediate reaction to crime was inhibited. This model is also characterized by strict supervision of the police officers. This involves tight control of the officers on duty hence high rigidity in crime response. Based on the traditional paradigm, the officers have limited discretion on their actions. This behavior may be changed through restructuring the police force department and instituting new reforms. This may involve removal of the complex bureaucratic standards in the police departments. Police should also be allowed to work under little supervision and given a chance to make individual decisions to enhance accountability (cited in Weisburd & Neyroud, 2013).
Criminal justice system is a set of factions and practices instituted by the government to regulate crime and to punish the law offenders. Knowledge utilization in criminal justice involves use of research information to identify crime. An example where knowledge utilization can be used in criminal justice is to influence change and affect adoption of new policies. Knowledge utilization may also be used in researching crime activities; this is where criminal justice practitioners may seek in-depth investigation on crime. Finally, knowledge utilization may also be used by criminal justice practitioners to establish a deeper understanding of the social set up (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2011, p. 453).
