The rise of sustainable leadership and management approaches to provide solutions for environmental, social, and economic challenges.
Introduction
The ability to lead and manage effectively is highly sought after by service industry employers as they seek to produce and develop managers who can motivate, enthuse and build respect throughout their workforce.
This unit is a Pearson-set unit; our chosen theme is detailed in the emboldened text, below.
The unit will enable students to explore and examine a relevant and current topical aspect of leadership and management in the context of the service sector environment. This unit also enables students to gain understanding of leadership and management principles, and to review their potential for a career in management in the service sector. After exploring organisations’ structures and cultures they will learn classical management theories and leadership styles and how these are applied to managing commercial organisations.
In addition to the students gaining a good understanding of how management theories are practiced in today’s industries, they will evaluate effective management and leadership skills for the service industries through application and reflection on skills required and applied in a service industry context.
Global challenges facing the Hospitality and Travel & Tourism industries
Circumstances over the last few years have seen the hospitality and tourism industry experience transformation at a breakneck speed. As the post pandemic recovery continues challenges continue to slow growth; rising inflation, lagging infrastructure, geopolitical uncertainty, staffing shortages, and the energy crisis have all converged to create a range of new challenges and issues, for travellers, and the hospitality and tourism industry alike.
On the bright side, recovery is on the horizon and hospitality and tourism business are rebuilding. But some geographies and industry sectors will face steeper challenges as they navigate their way forward. The industry must continue to overcome and address these through strong leadership and management.
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted the service industry, inevitably affecting disproportionately those businesses that exist to support social interactions
and placing strains on both supply and demand. As the pandemic continues to affect the industry: lock-down periods, and international and local restrictions on movement have led to a huge drop in revenues and a situation of emergency due to financial difficulties: • Dramatically lower revenues due to the uncertainty in the whole hospitality and travel ecosystem. • Uncertainty about the timing and speed of the recovery depending on the arrival of treatments for the virus in order to return to “normal” However, throughout the pandemic businesses have proven to be incredibly resilient. They have adapted their operations accordingly and innovatively introduced new ways of generating revenue – from providing takeaway meals and Home Food Kits to embracing new technology and maximising the use of outdoor space. This adaptability offers a blueprint for the future and gives hope that the businesses that have survived during the pandemic, and those that follow, will emerge stronger than before.
Learner will be reflecting on modern hospitality business practices, the assessment tasks do not rely solely on written and presentational activities. They are therefore reflective of the blended learning that students have undertaken during their time at Nelson College London.
Students will learn different approaches to leadership and management, which they will be able to adapt and adopt for their future careers. Students will be able to use this knowledge to develop further upon the strong foundations that they have already built during their time at Nelson College.
The submission will take the form of a report.
The report may be prepared in Word, Pages or other suitable document-based or publication-based software programme.
