I worked this experiment 5 times using different scenarios each planting. Experiment 1 Chamber 1 Chamber 2 Each of the first 2 pots planted with Golden Crop non Bt. The third pots were Bt 123. Were all corn varieties equally effective at controlling the ECB? How do you know? I primarily used the high infestations due to that being the scenario for the development of the Genetic Bt corn. From these experiments we find that even with the different Bt genetic corn there is a variation as to the yield when using the same infestation of ECB. The yield results in the last experiment where there was low ECB showed to me little significant result in the yield. I did experiment using a combination of non-Bt and Bt varieties of corn and found that there was not much difference in the non-Bt and the Bt variety when planted together. What might happen if Bt corn affects non-target organisms such as beneficial insects or harmless insects? Nature has provided deterrents to invasive pests. When nature is disrupted the beneficial or harmless deterrents no longer can control the pest and they multiply in abundance throwing nature further off course. Then it takes a lot of effort and time to try to reset the balance. What might happen if ECB became resistant to Bt? This also would throw nature off-balance. Man in his infinite wisdom would go about trying to eradicate the new strains created by using more powerful restraints. Super-strains of Bacteria came into being due to this process. Discuss possible benefits and drawbacks of a transgenic organism such as Bt corn? The experiments show possible benefits to methods of transgenic. There is a larger yield in crops and other products. However, since these do go against nature and we do not as yet know the results of the use of these over a period of time it could be argued that man should leave nature to control itself. Could there be a mutating of bacteria or other genes in the product? If produce containing transgenic are consumed over a long period of time could there be new diseases cropping up in beast and man? A farmer planted a field of Bt 123 corn and wants to estimate the yield in terms of bushels per acre. He counts 22 ears in 1/1000 of an acre. He determines that each ear has about 700 kernels on average. He also knows that a bushel contains about 90,000 kernels on average. What is the farmer`s estimate of yield in bushels/acre? 171.11 bushels /acre I worked this experiment 5 times using different scenarios each planting. Dependent and Independent Variables experiment Name of student Institution Instructor Course Date due Introduction Bt corn which is a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) has been in existence since the 1990`s, acting as an insect pest and an insect pathogen. (Hall H., 2005) Specifically, Bt corn is used to produce a protein toxin which is essential in the elimination of the infamous European Corn Borer (ECB). With all its positive results against ECB, there is a considerable measure of opposition to the use of Bt corn, mainly due to human health concerns. Some of the human health problems arising from the use of Bt corn include allergenicity, toxins, and antibiotic resistance genes. (Hall H., 2005) However, most of these purported risks are still at the test stage. Back to the experiment, Bt corn is a crucial component of pest management in the production of corn. In the management of ECB, Bt corn is not so effective because its short lifespan does not cope well with the ECB larvae spend most of their life inside the stem. Therefore, Bt corn can only be effective in fighting ECB if a way of introducing the bacteria into the corn stem is designed.
