Write an essay on the representation of varieties of English in ‘Melody’ (the Ahdaf Soueif story)
Write an essay of 2,500 words on ONE of the following topics. The questions in this section
assess your ability to 1) identify some of the key linguistic features of varieties of English
around the world; and 2) discuss these features as they occur and operate in some of the
fiction we have studied. This means that you should support your argument with appropriate
linguistic and/or sociolinguistic analysis. Remember as well that your argument should be your
ANSWER to a question or your STANCE in a debate, not a proposal to discuss something. In
addition, your essay should be your own work, and must not contain any plagiarised material. In
addition, I will expect to see evidence that you have gone beyond material introduced and discussed in
lectures and seminars.
This question is very open, meaning that you have make it very clear in the introduction what
your essay will be focusing on (and why). As long as you establish this at the start you are
free to pursue your own lines of enquiry. Your essay must include detailed and systematic
linguistic analysis, supported by wider reading and be structured appropriately.
